U.S. To Invite Arab Nations Tuesday to Annapolis

The United States plans to send out invitations to Arab nations and Israel on Tuesday for the Annapolis, Maryland conference, which is scheduled to take place next Tuesday. Saudi Arabia is one of the 13 Arab League countries on the invitation list although it has not yet announced whether it will attend. It has hinted that it may send a junior official instead of its foreign minister. Syria also will be invited, but Hamas has been shunned.

Other countries to be invited are Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Sudan, Tunisia and Yemen as well as major Western powers.

The Arab League is to meet on Friday in an attempt to present a united stand on the conference. Arab countries have insisted on a clearer agenda and a commitment by Israel that it will surrender all of the land that was restored to the Jewish state after the Six-Day War in 1967.
