Syria has agreed to attend the Annapolis summit after receiving assurances from the United States it would receive an open, formal invitation to the gathering rather than one through the quiet backchannels of quiet diplomacy.

The report published Thursday in the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram quoted an unnamed Palestinian Authority source based in Damascus.
