The Israel Electric Corp. (IEC) has hired 150 non-Jews to work on the Sabbath in order to prevent Jews from having to violate the day of rest. The company has been fined several times for violating the Sabbath.

IEC also is advancing a program to meet Sabbath requirements, hoping to reduce the number of private generators used by the Hareidi religious community who refuse to use electricity from IEC because of Sabbath violations.
