Bank HaPoalim, Israel's largest bank, is being hit by the American credit crisis, which already has cost it $120 million. The bank's bond investments include about $3.5 billion worth of securities that are backed by mortgages.
Further losses could be incurred if the bonds' ratings are lowered by international agencies, an action that would lower the value of the holdings by another $175-350 million.
