Court Orders Prison to Pay for Terrorist’s Transplant

(IsraelNN.com) The Tel Aviv District Court has ordered the Prison Services to allow and fund a kidney transplant for imprisoned terrorist Ahmed el-Tamimi.  El-Tamimi is serving a life sentence for his involvement in fatal attacks against Israelis.  He was diagnosed with kidney problems in 2001 and has been receiving dialysis treatments three times a week since then.

Doctors for Human Rights filed a suit demanding that Prison Services pay for el-Tamimi to receive a kidney transplant from his nephew.  Prison Services officials argued that the treatment was not necessary to save el-Tamimi’s life, and said they lacked the funding to cover the cost of the surgery, which will cost tens of thousands of dollars.  The court rejected the Prison Service’s claim, saying that while the transplant operation is not immediately necessary, it is likely to increase el-Tamimi’s life expectancy.
