MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz) has proposed a law that would punish the clients of prostitutes. Those caught employing a prostitute could be sentenced to six months in prison, or could shorten their sentence by choosing to participate in a workshop about the negative effects of prostitution.
Gal-On’s proposal will be discussed in the Knesset’s Subcommittee on the Trafficking in Women. Representatives from France and Sweden, which both have laws punishing prostitutes’ clients, will take part in the debate. An poll conducted by “Tel Seker” showing that only six percent of the general public believes clients should be sentenced to time in prison will be discussed as well.
