‘Gal’ Submarine Taken to Haifa Naval Museum

Israel’s last Gal class submarine was transported from the Haifa port to Haifa’s Naval Museum on Thursday night.  Police shut down traffic in part of the city in order to allow the submarine to pass.

The Gal submarines were the first set of submarines to be designed and constructed for the Israeli navy.   Earlier submarines were refurbished boats built before World War II.  The Gal class submarines were known for their agility and sophistication despite their relatively small size.  The Gal was first used in the 1970s, and has since been replaced by the Dolphin.
