Israel Follows U.S., Accepts Syria at Planned Meeting

Israel will not object to Syria's participating in the planned American-sponsored international conference on the Middle East in two months, the office of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Monday. His spokeswoman Miri Eisin stated, "The United States is the one that will issue the invitations and that will define the criteria for the invitations, and we have no problem with whomever they decide to invite."

As recently as last week, American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters that Syria, as a supporter of terrorism, has no place at the conference. However, she gave in to Arab pressures that the conference could not take place without the participation all Arab countries.
