The New York City Police Dept. has nixed a plan by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to lay a wreath at Ground Zero during his scheduled visit to the United Nations next Tuesday. The Bush administration has granted him a permit to enter the United States but denied permits to his aides, and he apparently is accepting the conditions for his visit.
New York city officials and local media were bitterly angry at the suggestion that Ahmadinejad visit Ground Zero. A Daily News photo of the Iranian president was captioned, "If you even think of setting foot near Ground Zero, you can GO TO HELL!"
American President George W. Bush replied to the decision by the police, "I can understand why they would not want somebody who is running a country, who is a state sponsor of terror, down there at the site."
