Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski and Haj Ihye Sanduka will together fire the opening shot of a cannon to mark the beginning of the Islamic month of Ramadan Sunday evening.

The cannon is fired twice a day throughout the month, to awaken Muslims for a day of fasting and to inform them when the fast day ends.  Muslims fast each day for the entire month of Ramadan.

The family of Haj Ihye Sanduka has been in charge of firing the cannon for more than a hundred years, since the Ottoman period.
