Two days after the Lebanese army succeeded in driving terrorist group Fatah Al-Islam from the town of Nahr el-Bared in northern Lebanon, Defense Minister Elias Murr announced that at least 427 people had been killed in the battle for the city. 222 of those killed were terrorists, he said. An additional 202 terrorists were taken captive.
163 Lebanese soldiers were killed in the fighting, which lasted for 15 weeks and included air strikes and bombings from land and sea. At least 42 civilians were killed, and the town was almost completely destroyed. The battle was Lebanon’s worst internal conflict since the civil war that ended in 1990.
