Egypt's 78 year old President Hosni Mubarak has not been seen in public events or on television for two weeks and Egypt's press has begun speculating that his health has deteriorated. Mubarak did not show up an annual meeting with students at Alexandria's Abu-Kir suburb, an event he always attended in recent years.
Rumors of his poor condition increased after Egyptian TV showed pictures of what they said was a visit this week to the communication and computer center in western Cairo. The photos are said to be old ones.
Israel is also following the matter with worry: Mubarak's demise could lead to instability, raising the specter of an Islamist takeover.
