Egypt Rejects Claims of Tacit Aid to Hamas Smuggling

Egypt has rejected accusations by Public Security Minister Avi Dichter that Egypt is assisting Hamas terrorists by not stopping them from bringing huge amounts of explosives and weapons into Gaza. The smuggling escalated after the IDF withdrew from the Egyptian-Gaza border two years ago, when Israel agreed to give Egypt authority to patrol the area.

Hamas has been able to act more freely since its military takeover in Gaza three months ago, but the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that Minister Dichter's comments reflected "genuine ignorance" and were part of "an attempt to weaken Egypt's standing in the region."
