The Israeli school year which begins next week will see some 2 million students learning in some 18,000 learning institutions. According to official Education Ministry figures, 1,804,761 students will be learning in 17,499 kindergartens, elementary and high schools throughout the country.
Among the new students will be 74 non-Jewish Sudanese refugees from the Darfur region. 16 will be learning in Arad, 23 in Kibbutz Eilot and 35 in Eilat. The Education Ministry’s budget now stands at NIS 28 billion or about $7 billion. Due to a Supreme Court ruling the Education Ministry may be forced to build 18 new rocket proof schools in Sderot.
