Declaration Instead of Shielding to “Protect” Sderot

With the majority of Sderot schools defenseless against ongoing Kassam rocket attacks and the school year set to begin next week, Education Minister Yuli Tamir has come up with a unique way to protect Sderot’s children. Tamir wants Defense Minister Ehud Barak to “declare” that the besieged city is “safe”.  This in spite of the fact that a Kassam rocket struck a Sderot kindergarden playground just last week.

Tamir’s request has been met with ridicule even within her own party. Labor MK Matan Vilnai has suggested that Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz “promise” there will be no more traffic accidents. In contrast, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quick to answer Tamir’s call and claimed that the defenses in Sderot are “sufficient”. 700 students have left Sderot since the last school year and Sderot parents are threatening to keep their children home if government promises to shield all schools are not implemented immediately.
