No Manslaughter against Truck Driver Who Killed Two

Government prosecutors have rejected police recommendations for manslaughter charges against an Israeli Arab truck driver with 190 previous violations, who plowed into a car last Shabat, killing a father and five-year-old girl. The widow, Irit Suleimani, survived her injuries in the crash on Highway 1 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Instead of manslaughter, the prosecution is considering charging the driver for "causing death by negligence." Government attorneys argued that since the driver was not speeding he therefore did not pose a danger to the public despite his record of traffic violations.

Judges often allowed convicted drivers to hold on to their license because their work depends on their being able to drive. The prosecution is expected to decide what charges to file against Otman at the beginning of next week.
