Calls are increasing for the Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu parties to resign from the governing coalition. The two parties have frequently come under fire for supporting the left-leaning coalition, but calls have increased following reports that the government is headed towards major territorial concessions.
According to the Yediot Acharonot newspaper, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas are secretly discussing changing the borders of Jerusalem, creating a passage linking Gaza to Judea and Samaria and allowing Arab immigrants into the territories.
"At a time when Olmert is playing around with national interests just in order to stay in power, Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu must stop clinging to their seats," said Likud faction head MK Gideon Saar. "There is no way that Olmert can reach a final status agreement without a mandate, without following proper government procedure and without consulting the security establishment. This is simply a joke," Saar added.
