A ceremony to celebrate the construction of a new apartment complex near the Mea Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem was delayed for hours Wednesday night.
The Satmar Rebbe, Rabbo Aharon Teitelbaum, arrived Wednesday specifically to attend the cornerstone ceremony. He was surrounded by thousands of supporters and other hareidi religious Jews flooding the streets at the site of the former Edison cinema.
The community had opposed the screening of movies near the hareidi neighborhood for years. The Edison was sold to the Satmar community for more than a million dollars to make way for a new building complex which is to house some 180 young families.
