A cache of more than a thousand pounds (500 kg) of explosives were discovered in the Sinai Peninsula Sunday after Egyptian police received a tip from Bedouins in the area about a drug smuggling ring.

The explosives were found buried near Gifgafa, a village in the central part of the desert, some 50 miles (80 km) south of El-Arish. Last month Egyptian police confiscated 2,645 pounds (more than 1,200 kg) of TNT in the northern Sinai, also buried.

The Sinai is often used by smugglers bringing drugs and weapons into Gaza.
