Tamir Wants Yesha Higher Education Council Closed

Education Minister Yuli Tamir said Thursday that she will work to shut down the Higher Education Council of Judea and Samaria (MALAG YOSH), in retaliation for its willingness to give Judea and Samaria College in Ariel university status.

Leftist organ Ha'aretz says the minister intends to merge the Judea and Samaria Higher Education Council with the national Higher Education Council, thereby making every person appointed to the national body a member of the smaller body as well. The head of the Judea and Samaria council, Prof. Amos Altshuler of Ben Gurion University said that while he is "the first to admit that MALAG YOSH is a superfluous body," he thinks the merger should be carried out "with goodwill and in a clean atmosphere."

The current merger, he said, "is motivated by a will to cancel our decision to create a university center" in Ariel.
