Katzav To Lose Benefits If Convicted of 'Shame'

The Knesset Finance Committee several moments ago unanimously approved slashing benefits to former President Moshe Katzav if he is convicted of crimes that the court defines as "shame." Benefits that would be cut include free housing, expenses for entertaining guests and free phone service. His pension and medical care would not be affected.

A plea bargain with the government, under review by the High Court, would spare Katzav from charges of rape in return for his pleading guilty to lesser offenses.
