The government plans to ease the process of adoption in order to allow for more single-parent families --- and same-sex couples – to adopt a child.
According to a report published Sunday by Ynet, the Social Services Ministry recently granted permission for 30 lesbian couples to adopt a child, in some cases the child of one of the partners by a former husband.
A committee established by Social Services Minister Yitzchak Herzog recently proposed a plan to enable singles and homosexuals to adopt a child. Under the plan, parent candidates would be evaluated for their ability to take care of a child, regardless of sexual orientation or marital status.
At present, the law permits only “normative” households – a married couple consisting of one male and one female – to adopt a child in Israel.
