Ruhama Avraham Heads 60th Independence Day Plans

Knesset Liaison Minister Ruhama Avraham (Kadima) will oversee next year's celebrations of the 60th year of the modern Jewish state, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced Tuesday morning. Minister Yaakov Edery (Kadima) earlier rejected taking the position, saying he wanted to concentrate on his new responsibilities at the Immigration Ministry. He also is replacing President Shimon Peres to take charge of plans for development in the Galilee and Negev.

The budget for the festivities is 100 million shekels ($23.5 million).
