Barak Faces Loud Protests in Nazareth
While Israeli Jews have seemingly "forgotten" - as far as the media is concerned - the various problems and failings left behind by once Prime Minister Ehud Barak, seeking a second term, Israeli Arabs have not. Responsible for, among other things, some say, the intensification of the intifada in October 2000, the media has largely ignored Barak's failure to respond to terrorist rocket attacks on Jerusalem.
On a visit to Nazareth Saturday, however, Israeli Arabs showed that they still held Barak accountable for what they consider his failings - specifically, the deaths of 13 Galilee Arabs in the north after they rioted, destroyed cars owned by Jews, and threw stones at passing motorists, closing highways in the Galilee for extended
periods. Shouting "Barak is a murderer," the Arab protesters demanded that Barak leave town and withdraw from running as the Labor Prime Ministerial candidate. Barak had no comment on the protests.
