Egyptian police announced on Thursday night that they had discovered more than 1,200 kilograms of explosive material. The explosives were found buried in the northern Sinai Peninsula, approximately 100 kilometers from the border with Gaza.
Police said the explosives were discovered following a tip from a local Bedouin. It is unclear at this time if the explosives were to be smuggled in to Gaza, or were intended to be used in an attack on a tourist site in Sinai.
