The new Middle East envoy for the Quartet of peacekeeping nations, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, says he is expecting to begin his duties with a trip to the Middle East next month.

The Quartet, comprised of the U.S., Russia, United Nations and European Union, formally appointed Blair to the post on Wednesday.

Blair has said he supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian Authority state, and will begin in July to lay the groundwork for a “two-state solution”, in which Israel would exist side by side with a PA state.
