American Jewish billionaire Sheldon Adelson has called off negotiations for purchasing Ma'ariv, Israel's second largest Hebrew daily. Sources at Ma'ariv and quoted by Globes stated that the newspaper's owner Ofir Nimrodi wants $180 million, almost 50 percent more than Adelson has offered.

Observers had stated that if Adelson were to buy Ma'ariv, he would create a revolution in Israeli media. Adelson instead may invest in a new free daily.
