Minister of Strategic Affairs Avigdor Lieberman will travel to Europe on Monday to meet with European officials and promote his plan to station NATO forces in Gaza. Lieberman believes that international forces will succeed in stabilizing the area and preventing weapons smuggling. According to Lieberman, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni have approved his trip, but did not initiate it.
Lieberman will also discuss the possibility of adding Israel to the NATO pact or to the European Union. The process of requesting membership will be a long one, he said, but expressed hope that his visit would serve as a “foundation stone” to Israel’s eventual participation in both groups.
