Arabs Demand Restoration of Village
Descendants of Arabs who fled Israel and demanding the “right of return” trespassed in Canada Park on Shabbat, holding an illegal demonstration on land they claim belonged to them before the state came into being. The demonstration was organized by a Jewish-run leftist group which is dedicated to preserving the memory of the “Nakba,” the Arab term meaning “tragedy” used to describe the establishment of Israel.
The demonstrators set up signs throughout the park designating spots they claim was part of the Arab village of Emmaus, abandoned by Arabs who fled after the Six Day War. They said they were prepared “to live in peace with the Jews,” and that their relations with neighboring Jewish kibbutzim and villages before the war had been good.
