The extremely hot weather that hit Israel over Shabbat kept people inside for the most part – near there air conditioners, with the Israel Electric Company reporting near record use of electricity. The highest recorded temperature was in the Jordan Valley, with 45 degrees Centigrade (113 Fahrenheit) reported. But temperatures nearly everywhere in the mountainous areas, including Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, temperatures hovered around 35 degrees Centigrade (100 Fahrenheit) for most of the afternoon. Tel Aviv recorded a high of 28 Centigrade (82 Fahrenheit) – but with a 70 percent humidity level, the heat was just as bad as in the mountains.
Firefighters were kept busy putting out over 20 blazes in various forests and nature reserves Shabbat. Hundreds of dunams of forest in the Galilee were lost in what police said in many cases were suspicious fires, posibly set by Arabs.
The hot temperatures are expected to continue through Thursday, with even hotter temperatures predicted for Sunday and Monday.
