Arms smuggling tunnels under the city of Rafiah, which straddles the Gaza-Egyptian border, include mechanized pulley systems to bring in weapons, The New York Times reported. Construction of tunnels can take up to six months, according to terrorists and smugglers interviewed for the report. Tunnels are often dug from under homes to avoid detection.

Most of the weapons are made in Russia and China, and assault rifles probably arrived via Sudan, smugglers told the newspaper.
