Pashkevilin, the large black-and-white posters which frequently appear in Hareidi-Orthodox neighborhoods to announce or condemn a wide variety of issues, appeared on Jerusalem streets on Monday morning calling on people to attend the Pride March, scheduled to take place in Jerusalem on Thursday. The posters, which were made to look authentic, calls on people to ignore the “small fringe groups” which are inciting violence and to show that Judaism discourages incitement and violence.
The banners were signed by a group calling itself “Citizens for an Egalitarian, Sane Israel”, and provoked outrage amongst Hareidim. The Pride March is a pro-gay rights rally which has instigated intense controversy in Jerusalem, based on Biblical opposition to homosexuality.
