Sources: Abbas may Ask for Barghouti’s Freedom
(IsraelNN.com) Aides to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas stated that he intends to ask Israel to free convicted murderer and popular Arab leader Marwan Barghouti from an Israeli prison. Barghouti is serving five consecutive life sentences for his role in the death of five Israelis in terror attacks. He was the leader of the Tanzim militia before his imprisonment in Israel. He had been considered a potential future leader of the PA.
Abbas would ask for Barghouti’s release on the premise that it would help him shore up Fatah’s strength in Judea and Samaria after having lost Gaza. Fatah is considered more moderate than its rival, Hamas.
