(IsraelNationalNews.com) Citing “the good of the party,” Knesset Chairman and one of the leaders of the Labor party, Avraham Burg, announced that he is calling for a complete cancellation of the results of the Labor party primaries, which were held on the fourth of September, 2001. At a press conference held this afternoon, Burg said that “evil and false” charges were made by “people who pushed [Binyamin] Ben-Eliezer” against him and against the Druse voters of the Labor party, in order to “steal the election” from Burg. Ra’anan Cohen, current chairman of the Labor party, speaking on IDF Radio, praised the Burg proposal and called for Binyamin Ben-Eliezer to accept it, without pre-conditions.

The results of the September primaries, which would have given Avraham Burg the mantle of leadership of the Labor party, were challenged by those Labor activists supporting Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer. Charges were made that wide-spread voter fraud, particularly in the Druse sector, was the source of Burg’s success. An internal Labor party committee has been investigating the charges and similar counter-charges for the past two months.
