Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has announced he will appoint the PA Finance Minister, American-backed Salam Fayyad, as Prime Minister in place of Ismail Haniyeh.
The move came less than a day after Abbas disbanded the Fatah-Hamas unity government, an action that Haniyeh says is illegal. He insisted he will continue in his post and proposed a resumption in negotiations with Fatah.
