Colette Avital May Not Quit Race in Second Round
Knesset Member Colette Avital, Labor party candidate for President, said Wednesday morning that she may not quit the race if the voting goes into a second round, as expected. Speaking shortly before a Labor caucus meeting, MK Avital stated, "I will make the decision depending on how many votes I receive."
She added that "so many people have promised so many things" that no one knows what the results will be. All of Labor's 19 Knesset Members, except for Shelly Yechimovich, have said they will back her.
MK Avital said she is the first woman to run for President. She is running against Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres (Kadima) and MK Reuven Rivlin (Likud). According to Knesset rules, there will be a second round if none of the candidates wins an absolute majority. However, the trailing candidate has the right to remain in the contest until a third round, if necessary.
