Right-wing and religious activists are planning a rally in Tel Aviv to protest the gay pride march scheduled to take place in Jerusalem on June 21. Tel Aviv was chosen because of its reputation as a secular, decadent city. The protesters wish to demonstrate that they feel that a gay march in Jerusalem is incompatible with the city’s nature, just as their march would be provocative in Tel Aviv. They also plan to bring animals to the rally, to say that homosexual behavior is “animal-like”.
In addition to the protest, MKs from religious parties proposed a law that would give municipalities the right to decline the right to march to groups who it deems dangerous or overly provocative. Left-wing and gay-rights groups condemned the proposed law as violating basic democratic rights.
