Aviation officials warned Tuesday that poor maintenance of passenger aircraft are beginning to create safety hazards.

Monday, an El Al flight managed to arrive safely at Ben Gurion Airport from Madrid, despite crew members having to struggle with a cockpit filled with smoke due to a short circuit in the engine ventilation system.

“Not enough is being invested in the planes’ safety,” said Chief Inspector Yitzchak Raz of the Ministry of Transportation, who warned “If we don’t improve the maintenance of the aircraft, a disaster is bound to occur.”
