Education Ministry: We Won't Close Druze Kindergartens

A representative of the Ministry of Education said Tuesday that his office "would not allow the closing of a single nursery school" in the Druze sector. Edi Hershkovitz, the Ministry of Education's Deputy Director for Finances, spoke at an urgent Knesset Education Committee session convened at the request of Deputy Knesset Chairman Majali Wahaba, who heads the Knesset's Druze and Circassian lobby.

The meeting discussed a previous Education Ministry announcement that 50 nursery schools for 3-4 year olds would be shut down. Wahaba said that it was unacceptable that "when the High Court wants to do right by one population, the Education Ministry will hurt another population in response."

Wahaba was apparently referring to a recent Supreme Court decision that demanded Israel cease favoring education systems in areas of national importance, because this was unfair towards the Arab population.
