Livni: ‘Tried to Meet with Olmert’ at Beginning of War

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told the Winograd Commission that she had tried repeatedly to meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert during the first days of the Second Lebanon War, according to a transcript released by the commission Sunday.

"I asked for a meeting on Thursday (the day after the war broke out), to take the political way out," she testified, "but I did not get my meeting." She said she did not succeed in arranging a meeting with the prime minister in person until the Katyusha rockets began to explode in Haifa.

Ms. Livni’s testimony before the Winograd Commission was released after security censorship. The commission has been tasked with investigating the government’s performance during last summer’s war.
