Peres: This May Be My Last Chance To Serve the Country

Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres said Wednesday morning that if he is elected President, it "may be the last chance I have to serve the country." The veteran politician also maintained that he accept the nomination because of numerous requests.

However, he campaigned several months ago for the Knesset to conduct the vote for President by an open ballot, which would have put pressure on colleagues to back up public support with a vote for him. The Knesset denied the request and he hesitated to announce his candidacy.
