Syrian dictator Bashar Assad won a show-referendum in which he was unopposed, affirming his presidency, according to Syria’s Interior Minister Bassam Abdel-Majid.
Abdel-Majid held a press conference announcing that Assad had received 97.62 percent of the votes. He also claimed 95.86 percent of eligible voters – 11.19 million people – took part in the election. Only 1.71 percent voted against Assad, he said.
253,000 votes were invalidated, according to Abdel-Majid. "The wide consensus showcases Syria's political maturity and our multi-party politics," he added.
