(IsraelNN.com) Rashid Abu Shabak, the head of Palestinian Authority preventative security, has resigned, according to sources within the PA. Abu Shabak was the target of a Hamas attack less than two weeks ago in which six of his bodyguards were killed. He has reportedly fled Gaza.

Abu Shabak’s resignation comes shortly after that of Hani Kawasmeh, who held the highly contested position of PA Interior Minister. Kawasmeh accused Abu Shabak and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of ruining his plan to bring security to Gaza, and Hamas later accused Abu Shabak of deliberately undermining the plan. Sources close to Abu Shabak say that he did not receive sufficient support from Fatah in his struggle with Hamas.
