IDF spokesmen reported that a number of Katyusha rockets were fired into Israel from southern Lebanon and landed in a northern area IDF base, lightly injuring a soldier.
--Defense Minister Amir Peretz (Labor) stated that Israel will not permit a situation in which terrorists based in Lebanon fire rockets into northern Israel. He added, "We don’t have any intention of absolving the Lebanese government for responsibility for what’s happening in the north."
--Marking the sixth anniversary of Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the security zone in southern Lebanon, Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah, said his organization was determined to preserve its independent terrorist base inside southern Lebanon. Nasrallah said his group’s 12,000 rockets, which can strike deep inside northern Israeli territory, provide a deterrent balance to the IDF.
--Minister for Developing the Negev and the Galilee, Shimon Peres (Kadima) told municipal leaders in the north that Israel “knows how to defend itself. Peres ordered his ministry to provide any assistance necessary to enable residents of the Galilee to cope with the situation. “Nothing is too small or too great for us. Calm will return to the Galilee,” he said.
--Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned, “Israeli retaliation in Lebanon is a severe warning for Palestinians within its territory in terms of what is waiting for them if they continue” firing rockets into Israeli territory. "The [terrorist] organizations will confront heavy retaliation, without hesitation, if the escalation continues.”
--Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will be transported today to the rehabilitation facility located in Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer in Tel Aviv.
