(IsraelNN.com) Jerusalem Police Chief Ilan Franco sent a letter on Thursday granting his initial approval to a gay pride parade in Jerusalem. The annual parade, organized by the “Open House” in Jerusalem, is scheduled to take place on June 21st.

Franco wrote that the police are obligated by the Supreme Court to provide security for the parade, and to allow participants to march from Independence Park to Liberty Bell Park in Jerusalem. However, he said, the police retain the right to determine the location and timing of the parade based on the circumstances. The parade was replaced by a demonstration on Hebrew University’s Givat Ram campus in 2006 due to fears of violence against parade participants.
