(IsraelNN.com) Former Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said Monday morning he supports targeted killings of terrorists but is against a ground invasion into Gaza. He explained to Voice of Israel government radio that bringing in foot soldiers to curtail terrorism would be "problematic" and that the troops would have to remain in the area for several months.

Ben-Eliezer initiated the policy of targeted killings when he served as Defense Minister in the Sharon government. He now is Infrastructures Minister. He explained that aiming at terrorist leaders causes them "to feel that they have no safe haven."

The Labor minister added that the government in the past stopped the practice of targeted killings because "every five minutes someone said let's show good intentions...and strengthen Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.... I suggest not to stop."
