The Knesset’s Committee on the Status of Women met on Tuesday and voted unanimously to approve a proposal that would increase government funding for daycare. The funding would be granted to working single parents of young children and to households with two working parents of children under the age of five.
The law would grant 890 shekels per month, or five tax credit points, to full-time working parents of one young child. For a second young child parents would get 712 shekels a month, and for the third and onwards, 534 a month.
If passed, the bill is expected to cost the government six billion shekels a year. Committee Chairman MK Gidon Saar (Likud) explained that any woman who did not use all of her tax credits would receive the benefits as a grant. Saar praised the new law, saying it was a “dramatic” step that would increase participation in the workforce.
