PA Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh will fill the position vacated by resigned Interior Minister Hani Kawasmeh. Haniyeh accepted Kawasmeh’s resignation on Monday.

The position of Interior Minister, which is in charge of internal security in PA areas, was a serious bone of contention between Hamas and Fatah. In the current make-up of the PA government, each faction has veto power over the selection of an Interior Minister.

Haniyeh was also expected to order a crackdown on violence in Gaza, in an attempt to stop clashes between Hamas and Fatah factions.
