(IsraelNN.com) State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss reported Wednesday that many employees in the state’s General Health Funds (Kupot Cholim) receive illegal benefits. Workers and their family members often receive free or reduced-price medicines, discounts on medical services, and exemptions from co-payments.

According to the health funds, 52,000 workers and former workers receive benefits. Many of the workers receive benefits for their family members as well, creating a situation in which the Health Funds spend a significant amount of money on employee benefits. Lindenstrauss found that the Health Funds had ignored suggestions to gradually do away with the benefits, and that the three major funds together spent 70 million shekels a year on benefits, 66 million of which was spent by Clalit.
