Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Wednesday that the problems mentioned in State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss’s report were caused by a lack of funding. The report criticized the IDF for failing to deal with rocket attacks and weapons smuggling tunnels. “If only Israel had the right means to deal with the rocket threat,” Peretz said, “there’s no doubt that the entire system would look completely different.”

Residents of Sderot, which has suffered hundreds of rocket attacks since the beginning of the Oslo war, said that the IDF’s lack of preparedness is insignificant when compared to the government’s refusal to act. A spokesman for the city pointed out that two houses suffered direct hits from rockets in the past week, and yet the government’s policy of restraint continued.
